Programmer creates 800,000 books algorithmically, starts selling them on Amazon | ExtremeTech | Create, Innovate & Evaluate in Higher Education | Scoop.it
A college professor has a patented system for algorithmically compiling data into book form. Thanks to this system, Amazon now has over 800,000 books for sale from his company.
Alfredo Corell's insight:

A huge project... I haven't already seen any of this "automatically generated books". I really hope professionals are still needed for conten curation and appropriate compiling data.

MOOC as Networked Textbook and a look back at the feedbook | xED Book

MOOC as Networked Textbook and a look back at the feedbook | xED Book | Create, Innovate & Evaluate in Higher Education | Scoop.it

A comment by Jason Green on twitter got me thinking again about a different lens through which to see the MOOC. The book, and particularly the textbook, are at the core of many of our classrooms. There’s no denying that having the content for a course all tied up in a handy, portable, near unbreakable format is convenient. Proof of this can be found in the fact that the yearly slaying of trees, organizing of content, printing and ordering of books and queuing in the bookstore to purchase them are almost as strong today as it was 30 years ago. Surely some people (I’m looking at you Cable Green) have encouraged a move towards taking those books online, but many of those models replicate much of the ‘prepare, organize and buy’ models of the paper book industry while saving trees and avoiding fleecing the student. Those books are still, however, finite and finished.

Thank you Pawan for your kind response. Being the ebook your company has just released brand new, I found it curious to find in it examples that are "dead links" as for http://www.kevingleary.net/curated and sites that have not been updated in over a year as in www.brownbailout.com. I definitely am aware that sites on the web change with no advance notice, but for a "curated" ebook like this, two and half bad links outside of a total of 16 is not to me something to skip over.

In your place I think I would have acknowledged more openly the evident mistakes and would have worked around the clock to release a new, better and corrected version. To me, this is the essence of what a company that claims to do "top curation work" should do.

What's your take?
Pawan Deshpande's comment, January 21, 2013 9:43 AM
Robin, thank you once again for pointing out the broken link.

There's only ONE broken link of which I am aware. The creation of eBook has been a four month long process and during the course of it one of the links has gone dark. The Color Association of the United States is a perfectly valid, and captivating example of picture curation, as noted in my previous comment. Lastly, the FedEx site is a perfectly valid example of curation that has served its purpose (criticizing the bailout), and is hence no longer updated -- but is still an interesting example of curation as a marketing tool.

There's nothing "curious" going on here. One of the sites has gone dark, as you pointed out. We have since updated the eBook to denote that the site is no longer active. Thanks for sharing the link -- hope you and your readership enjoy it.

Thank you Pawan for your kind clarifications that allow me to better appreciate this good editorial work you have done.

I think this type of publication is right on the mark in serving the needs of your audience and my criticism was only directed at highlighting how important, for anyone involved in this field, me included, to pay great attention to details as the reader often does not have the time to appreciate what is not immediately evident.

Please keep up such great work as it helps the whole industry grow while educating customers with great examples.

In the past year, leading technology companies have made big strides in bringing tablet computers into classrooms across the country. But while the availability of new devices is certainly critical, the successful transition to digital textbooks relies on many interconnected factors.
