Perhaps one of the reasons why Maria Sharapova and Jelena Jankovic both reached the No.1 ranking is because when they were kids, they battled each other so hard at the Nick Bollettieri Academy in Florida that they drove each other to new competitive heights.

The only complication for Maria Sharapova’s first round match against Hsieh Su-Wei was its late rescheduling. Originally slated to be fourth on Philippe Chatrier Court, the joust was moved when it became clear that the epic duel between Gael Monfils and Tomas Berdych would continue deep into the evening.
